Delivering Immersive AV for a Week of Graduation Ceremonies

The Challenge

The University of Melbourne hosted seven days of graduation ceremonies at Melbourne’s heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, with up to 3,000 guests per session. Microhire was engaged to deliver consistent, high-quality production across ten ceremonies while respecting the venue’s unique architecture and layout.

The Solution

Microhire delivered complete technical services from concept to pack-down, including:

  • Staging and Visual Design
    • Designed a branded LED stage backdrop to replace traditional draping
    • Installed two large 5×2.5 metre floor-mounted LED walls on freestanding truss frames
    • Hung additional delay and centre hall LED walls to ensure visibility throughout all halls
  • Lighting and Ambience
    • Created a balanced lighting design to offset the venue’s changing natural light
    • Enhanced the stage presentation while preserving architectural visibility
  • Audio and Vision
    • Provided full sound reinforcement for speeches, choir and brass band performances
    • Managed multi-camera vision mixing, playback and foldback via LED walls and LCD displays
  • Production Support
    • Supplied a full technical crew for setup, rehearsals, live operation and pack-down
    • Carefully managed rigging distribution to meet structural load requirements

The Results

  • Successfully delivered ten graduation ceremonies over seven days, each attended by up to 3,000 guests
  • Maintained consistent technical quality across all sessions and venue spaces
  • Enhanced stage visibility and sound without compromising the building’s heritage features
  • Provided a smooth, professional experience for presenters, performers, and audiences
