Walkley Awards

Royal International Convention Centre

Celebrating Journalistic Excellence on a National Stage

The Challenge

The 2013 Walkley Awards brought together Australia’s leading media professionals for a nationally televised ceremony. Microhire partnered with the Walkley Foundation and ABC to manage full technical production, coordinating closely with ABC’s lighting designer and broadcast team to optimise staging, lighting, and camera positions.

The floorplan was designed to support roving cameras, a boom camera, and an elevated fixed camera, with pre-air checks and a full rehearsal held the day prior.

The Solution

Microhire delivered comprehensive technical production across all show elements, including:

Visual Projection
- Installed 2 x Christie HD 20K projectors with a 60-foot blended screen
- Provided Ascender vision mixer for live camera mix and recording
Audio System
- Supplied and flown Nexo PA system for full coverage
Lighting Design
- Installed 60 Robe intelligent moving lights and 70 static fixtures
- Included 70 table pinspots and broadcast-specific lighting with colour-correct gels
- Collaborated with ABC lighting designer to ensure correct fixture placement for broadcast quality
Staging & Rigging
- Designed and built Tivoli stairs as the main stage entry point
- Managed all rigging, draping, setup, and packdown
Show Operation
- Supplied a crew of 8 operators, including Technical Director, Vision, Graphics, Audio, Lighting, Followspot, and Stage Hand
- Worked in sync with ABC’s show caller, stage manager, and broadcast crew throughout the event
